Woodworking is not just a trade or skill. For us, it's also an engineering art form. For many, woodworking remains an expensive hobby; for Daniel, this hobby turned into a full-time job. You can learn more about our small business on the About Us Page.
However, the best way to explain what Daniel does as a woodworker is to say, "If it's made out of wood, he can build it."
Are you thinking of going to the big box stores to buy materials? Perhaps wandering a forest for a few days to learn how to identify wood species has appealed to you? Buying materials from a big box store is acceptable for some projects. For others, going to a specialty store could save your sanity and your pocketbook. The key to selecting the proper wood for any project is to ask yourself the following questions:
How am I planning on using this piece I want to build, and how can other people who may come into contact with it use it?
What kind of finish and upkeep will I do on this project?
For appearance what matters to you? Is it grain patterns, age, or bold wood coloring?
What kind of exposure will it have? Moisture, humidity, fluctuating temperatures, perhaps food?
You can call Daniel for advice or we suggest the following wood stores in the Denver metro area;
Here's a fun fact about Hanten Woodworking: We don't charge more for materials than you are charged for them, which is why we don't mind telling you where to find them.
Great people who know a lot about the trade.
Very knowledgeable, they tend to have more slabs in stock.
This, believe it or not, is a legitimate question. We often use various types of wood, depending on the project and our customer's preferences. The most frequently used are:
Oak, Walnut, Maple, Ash, Poplar, Alder, and Birch.
To do more research, we suggest the Woodcraft Website, which lists species alphabetically. Remember that finding some of these species in large quantities in Colorado can be extremely complicated and challenging as they are not native to Colorado or, in some cases, to the region. The species of wood will also drastically impact the cost of any project and not all species work for every project.
Caution: Most suppliers charge by the board foot, so read the fine print when selecting wood to estimate costs.
